Shapes, Angles and Coordinates

In Year 4 geometry, children look more closely at shapes and start to use the language of position. They sort triangles and quadrilaterals by their properties, learn to tell acute, obtuse and right angles apart, find lines of symmetry, and read and plot points on a grid using coordinates. None of it is as daunting as it sounds: it is really about noticing what makes one shape or angle different from another and describing it clearly.

Reading a coordinate

A coordinate is a pair of numbers that names one point on the grid. Count along the bottom first, then up.

For grown-ups

Sorting shapes, comparing angles and reading coordinates all ask a child to reason from properties rather than from how a shape happens to look, which is a key step in the England National Curriculum for this year. Naming a triangle by its equal sides, comparing an angle against a right angle, or reading a coordinate as so far across and then so far up are all small acts of precise description. That same care underpins the measuring, drawing and moving of shapes that gets richer in later years, and it is the first taste of the coordinate grid that runs all the way through secondary maths.

How to help at home

Sorting shapes and angles is about noticing properties, not memorising names. A few minutes spotting shapes and corners around the house, little and often, builds the eye for it far better than one long worksheet session.

  • Hunt for angles around the room and compare each to a right angle, the square corner of a book or sheet of paper: the corner of a door frame is a right angle, an open laptop sits more open so it is obtuse, and a slightly open pair of scissors is more closed so it is acute.
  • Sort triangles by counting equal sides out loud: three equal sides is equilateral, two equal is isosceles, none equal is scalene, and a square-corner triangle is right-angled. Pick four real triangles, perhaps a pizza slice and a set square, and name each one.
  • Test for lines of symmetry by folding: a paper square folds onto itself four ways, a rectangle two ways, so cut out a shape and fold it to find every line where the two halves match exactly.
  • Plot coordinates by reading along the bottom first, then up, with the saying 'along the corridor, then up the stairs': the point (3, 2) means 3 across and 2 up, never 2 across and 3 up.

Where children get stuck

The most common slip with coordinates is reading the two numbers the wrong way round, plotting (3, 2) as 2 along and 3 up. Fix it by always saying 'along the corridor, then up the stairs' before touching the grid, so the first number is always how far across and the second is always how far up.

Children also muddle obtuse and acute because the words feel interchangeable. Anchor both to the right angle: hold a book corner against the angle, and if the angle opens wider than the corner it is obtuse, if it stays more closed than the corner it is acute. With that one comparison, putting a set of angles in order of size becomes simple.
