Free betaYears 3 to 6, in England

The maths app your child will actually want to play

BrightWren picks your child's maths practice, marks it, and shows them how.

Free all 2026/27, and free for as long as we run it after that. It is written into our terms.

How to start

From the Join button to playing, in three steps.

  1. Sign up with your email

We email you a code to get in. There is no password.

  2. Add your child

A nickname and their school year. Nothing else about them.

  3. They design their alien

Then they are in, with today's Daily 5 waiting.

Five questions a day, picked for them

Daily 5 picks five questions a day from your child's year. The topics come in the order English schools teach them, term by term, and the questions get harder as your child gets better.

Want to choose instead? Quizzes let them pick any topic, a whole term or the whole year, ten questions at a time.

The Quizzes screen on a phone. Every quiz is 10 questions: choose the whole year, a term, or one topic from the list.
A Daily 5 question on a phone, the first of five: What is 3,766 + 3,089? A number pad sits under the question for typing the answer.
The Daily 5 card on a child's home screen: a green card with a play button, Daily 5, 5 quick questions.

Typed answers, marked at once

Most answers are typed on a number pad, so there is no list of options to guess from.

A wrong answer shows the right answer straight away, and why. If it is a common slip, the hint is written for that slip. If not, they see the method, step by step.

A Year 4 question on a phone: What is 58 × 100? The answer 58,000 has been typed on the number pad.
The same question after Enter. A card says Not quite, shows the answer 5,800, and gives the hint: multiplying by 100 moves each digit two places to the left, no further.

For parents

See where they need a hand

Your page lists every topic in your child's year, term by term, as green, amber or red: On track, Getting there or Needs a hand.

The colour comes from their last 20 answers on that topic, so it moves as they practise. With fewer than 5 answers it says Too early to say, rather than guessing.

The grown-ups' progress page, Topics. Three of five Year 4 autumn topics are On track in green, one is Getting there in amber and one, Times Tables, Multiplication and Division, Needs a hand in red. The fact map of the times tables: a grid of 2 to 12 by 2 to 12, with each fact green if they know it, red if it is not right yet, or grey if they have not tried it.

Planet Pickup

A space adventure that runs on maths

Your child designs an alien and flies a UFO from planet to planet, picking up aliens with right answers.

  • A map for every term

Each term of their year is its own map, with a planet for each of its topics.

  • An alien of their own

Head, face, ears, antennae, feet and colour, all chosen by them.

  • Paint jobs for the UFO

Earned with the asteroids they catch on the belts. Nothing is bought with money.

  • Trophies

Won for answering questions, getting topics right, finishing planets and sitting mock tests.

  • Bright weeks

Practise on any 2 days in a week and that week goes bright. Miss a week and nothing is lost. There are no streaks to lose.

  • Hats for the alien

Hats come from the Lost and Found, earned with asteroids, like the paint.

Year 4 Year 6

Practice for the national tests

Independent practice, built to the published rules.

The tables check mock running on a tablet: one times table question, the first digit of the answer typed in the box, Time left in the corner counting down from 6, and a grey number pad under it.

Year 4

Multiplication tables check

Practise the tables with no time limit, or sit a mock: 25 questions, 6 seconds each, after three warm-ups that do not count. Every answer is typed.

Your page shows a fact map of the times tables: what they know, what is not right yet and what they have not tried.

Year 3 can practise the tables too, without the mock.

The SATs Paper 1 mock running on a tablet: a question part way through the 36, the 30 minute clock counting down in the corner, and a number pad beside the question for typing the answer.

Year 6

SATs Paper 1: arithmetic

Practise in sets of 5, 10 or 20 questions with no time limit, or sit a timed mock: 36 questions in 30 minutes, scored out of 40.

Your page charts every mock score, and lists the kinds of calculation worth another look.

Year 5 can practise Paper 1 too, without the mock.

Questions

What parents ask

What happens when the beta ends?

Families who join the beta stay free for as long as we run the app. That includes years you open later as your child moves up, and any child you add later. It is written in our terms. If the app ever costs money, that is for families who join after the beta, not for you.

What do you keep about my child?

A nickname, their school year, the alien they design and the answers they give, all inside your account. We never ask for a real name, birthday, school, address, photo or email address. The privacy notice has the detail.

Will it push my child to buy things?

No. The child's side has no prices and nothing to buy with money. Hats for their alien and paint for their UFO are earned with asteroids they catch in the game.

Is it what they are learning at school?

Every topic is in the order English schools teach them, term by term. It cannot know this week's lesson, though, so Quizzes let you pick any topic.

It is a beta. Will it break?

It is new, so you may find rough edges. Tell us at hello@brightwren.co.uk and we will put them right.

Can I use it for more than one child?

Yes. One account, with each child under their own nickname and school year.

Is the mock score their SATs score?

No. The Paper 1 mock is out of 40, like the paper, but a screen cannot award the mark a marker can give for working.

Do I have to download it?

No. It runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or laptop, and you can add it to your home screen.
