AnswersYear 3Sheet Z2
  1. 432
  2. 92
  3. 27
  4. 9
  5. 7
  6. 641
  7. 346
  8. 20
  9. 641
  10. 600

How to work them out

  1. Line up the ones, tens and hundreds. Take each column away, starting on the right. Every column has enough, so nothing is exchanged. 996 − 564 = 432.

  2. Line up the numbers so the ones sit under the ones and the tens under the tens. Add each column, starting on the right. No column reaches ten, so nothing is carried. 42 + 50 = 92.

  3. Adding and taking away undo each other, so take 29 away from 56. 56 − 29 = 27.

  4. Drop back to ten first: 18 − 8 = 10. Then take away what is left: 10 − 1 = 9.

  5. Drop back to ten first: 14 − 4 = 10. Then take away what is left: 10 − 3 = 7.

  6. Keep the other digits the same and only add the hundreds. So for 341 + 300, just add the hundreds and leave the rest as they are. That gives 341 + 300 = 641.

  7. Line up the numbers so the ones sit under the ones and the tens under the tens. Add each column, starting on the right. No column reaches ten, so nothing is carried. 115 + 231 = 346.

  8. Count on from 80 up to 100. Count how far you went altogether: 80 + 20 = 100.

  9. Add the ones, but they go past nine here, so carry one on to the next column. That gives 632 + 9 = 641.

  10. Round each number to the nearest 100: 970 is about 1,000, 383 is about 400. Now the round numbers are easy: 1,000 − 400 = 600.

For grown-ups

How the worksheet works

Each sheet has ten questions. The first three are a warm-up, the middle four are the core of the topic and the last three are a stretch. There is room under each question to work it out, and a box for the answer. Where a question only works with its choices in front of you, the choices are printed and your child circles one.

The answers start on a new sheet, so you can keep them to one side. Each one comes with a way to work it out. The mark at the foot of the questions matches the mark on the answers.

Nothing is saved and nothing needs signing in to. Print as many as you like: New questions gives you a new sheet each time.

What the questions cover

Rather practise on screen? Year 3 addition and subtraction practice marks every answer as it goes and gets harder as your child gets them right.
