How to work them out
The shape is split into 3 equal parts. 1 part is shaded. The shaded parts go on top and all the parts go on the bottom. 1 of 3 shaded = 1/3.
1/2 means split 10 into 2 equal parts. 10 ÷ 2 = 5 (one half). So 1/2 of 10 = 5.
The bottom numbers match, so the pieces are all the same size; just compare the top numbers: the bigger top number means the larger fraction. The larger fraction is 5/6.
First check the parts really are equal in size. All 10 parts are the same size, so each one is really 1/10 of the whole shape. 9 of 10 equal parts shaded = 9/10.
The pieces are all the same size, so the bottom number stays the same; just add the top numbers. 6/8 + 1/8 = 7/8.
First check the parts really are equal in size. All 10 parts are the same size, so each one is really 1/10 of the whole shape. 4 of 10 equal parts shaded = 4/10.
First find one third: split 12 into 3 equal parts. 12 ÷ 3 = 4 (one third). Then take 2 of those parts: 2 × 4 = 8. So 2/3 of 12 = 8.
2 of the 10 parts are shaded, so 2/10 is shaded. Every 2 of the small parts make one bigger part, and there are 5 bigger parts. So 2/10 and 1/5 mean the same amount.
2 of the 8 parts are shaded, so 2/8 is shaded. Every 2 of the small parts make one bigger part, and there are 4 bigger parts. So 2/8 and 1/4 mean the same amount.
The pieces are all the same size, so the bottom number stays the same; just add the top numbers. 3/10 + 1/10 = 4/10.

For grown-ups
How the worksheet works
Each sheet has ten questions. The first three are a warm-up, the middle four are the core of the topic and the last three are a stretch. There is room under each question to work it out, and a box for the answer. Where a question only works with its choices in front of you, the choices are printed and your child circles one.
The answers start on a new sheet, so you can keep them to one side. Each one comes with a way to work it out. The mark at the foot of the questions matches the mark on the answers.
Nothing is saved and nothing needs signing in to. Print as many as you like: New questions gives you a new sheet each time.
What the questions cover
- Finding a fraction of a shape
- Finding a fraction of an amount
- Counting up and down in tenths
- Recognising equivalent fractions
- Comparing, ordering and adding fractions
Rather practise on screen? Year 3 fractions practice marks every answer as it goes and gets harder as your child gets them right.
