How to work them out
Find the cats bar. Read across from the top of the bar to the number line: it points to 2. So there are 2 cats.
Each picture stands for 2. There are 2 pictures next to pears. So count in 2s: 2 times 2 is 4.
Find the row for kites. Read the number next to it: 8. So there are 8 kites.
Read the cars bar: 30. Read the boats bar: 25. Take away to find how many more: 30 − 25 = 5.
There are 13 books and 8 comics. Take the smaller number away from the bigger one: 13 − 8 = 5. So there are 5 more books than comics.
Each picture stands for 2. There are 8 cats and 6 apples. To find how many more, take away: 8 minus 6 is 2.
Read the cats bar: 16. Read the boats bar: 2. Take away to find how many more: 16 − 2 = 14.
Each picture stands for 10. There are 20 pears and 10 apples. To find how many altogether, add: 20 plus 10 is 30.
There are 10 apples and 4 pears. Add the two numbers together: 10 + 4 = 14. So there are 14 apples and pears altogether.
Each picture stands for 10. There are 70 apples and 55 cats. To find how many altogether, add: 70 plus 55 is 125.

For grown-ups
How the worksheet works
Each sheet has ten questions. The first three are a warm-up, the middle four are the core of the topic and the last three are a stretch. There is room under each question to work it out, and a box for the answer. Where a question only works with its choices in front of you, the choices are printed and your child circles one.
The answers start on a new sheet, so you can keep them to one side. Each one comes with a way to work it out. The mark at the foot of the questions matches the mark on the answers.
Nothing is saved and nothing needs signing in to. Print as many as you like: New questions gives you a new sheet each time.
What the questions cover
- Reading a table
- Reading a bar chart
- Reading a pictogram
- How many more, and how many altogether
Rather practise on screen? Year 3 charts and pictograms practice marks every answer as it goes and gets harder as your child gets them right.
