How to work them out

  1. The line goes from 0 to 10, with a number on every mark. Find the mark with 8 written under it. That arrow points to 8.

  2. The arrow is sitting right on top of a number on the line. Read the number under the arrow: it is 5.

  3. The marks on the line go up in 10s, with 50 in the middle and 100 at the end. The arrow is in the second half, past the middle. It sits closest to 100, so the best round guess is 100.

  4. The numbers go down by 50 each time. The blank sits between 350 and 250, so it is 300.

  5. There are not enough tens, so the hundreds change too. So 201 − 10 = 191.

  6. Find which column the 9 sits in. The 9 is in the tens column, so it is worth 9 tens. Count up those tens: the 9 in 490 is worth 90.

  7. Listen for the hundreds, tens and ones in the words, then write each digit. Putting those digits together gives three hundred and forty-two = 342.

  8. Add the parts back together to make the whole number. 500 + 60 + 9 = 569.

  9. The line goes from 0 to 1,000 in 5 equal jumps. Each jump is worth 1,000 shared into 5, which is 200. The arrow is 1 jump along, so count 1 lot of 200. That lands on 200.

  10. Every 10 is one ten, so count how many tens fit inside the number. That makes 90 tens altogether.

For grown-ups

How the worksheet works

Each sheet has ten questions. The first three are a warm-up, the middle four are the core of the topic and the last three are a stretch. There is room under each question to work it out, and a box for the answer. Where a question only works with its choices in front of you, the choices are printed and your child circles one.

The answers start on a new sheet, so you can keep them to one side. Each one comes with a way to work it out. The mark at the foot of the questions matches the mark on the answers.

Nothing is saved and nothing needs signing in to. Print as many as you like: New questions gives you a new sheet each time.

What the questions cover

Rather practise on screen? Year 3 number lines and place value practice marks every answer as it goes and gets harder as your child gets them right.
