How to work them out
Look at the solid's faces and curved surfaces. This is a cube.
Go all the way round the square and add every side. 5 + 5 + 5 + 5 = 20. So the perimeter is 20 cm.
A quarter turn makes one square corner, which is one right angle. A half turn is two of those, a three-quarter turn is three, and a full turn is four. A half turn is two quarter turns, so it has two square corners. So this turn has 2 right angles.
Start at one corner and count the squares along each edge, all the way round the outside. Go round the outside one edge at a time, including the parts that step in and out. Counting all the way round gives 18, so the perimeter is 18 cm.
Look at where the lines would meet. These two lines cross and make a square corner, like the corner of a book. Lines like that are perpendicular.
A right angle makes a square corner, like the corner of a book. Compare how far this angle opens with a square corner. This angle opens to a square corner, so it is a right angle.
A horizontal line goes flat across, a vertical line goes straight up and down, and a sloping line tilts. Look at how this line lies on the grid. This line goes straight up and down, so it is vertical.
Count the corners, or count the sides, around the shape. This shape has 5 sides. A shape with 5 sides is a pentagon.
A horizontal line goes flat across, a vertical line goes straight up and down, and a sloping line tilts. Look at how this line lies on the grid. This line is not flat and not upright, it tilts, so it is sloping.
A right angle makes a square corner, like the corner of a book. Compare how far this angle opens with a square corner. This angle opens more than a square corner, so it is more than a right angle.

How the worksheet works
Each sheet has ten questions. The first three are a warm-up, the middle four are the core of the topic and the last three are a stretch. There is room under each question to work it out, and a box for the answer. Where a question only works with its choices in front of you, the choices are printed and your child circles one.
The answers start on a new sheet, so you can keep them to one side. Each one comes with a way to work it out. The mark at the foot of the questions matches the mark on the answers.
Nothing is saved and nothing needs signing in to. Print as many as you like: New questions gives you a new sheet each time.
What the questions cover
- Naming 2-D shapes by their number of sides
- Working out the perimeter of a shape
- Horizontal, vertical, parallel and perpendicular lines
- Recognising right angles
- Comparing angles to a right angle
- Name 3-D shapes and count their faces, edges and vertices
Rather practise on screen? Year 3 shapes, angles and lines practice marks every answer as it goes and gets harder as your child gets them right.
